Governor Richard Michael Dewine: Flags Will Fly at Half-Staff in Wayne County and State Buildings This Week

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine ordered that U.S. and Ohio flags be flown at half-staff at public buildings and grounds in Wayne County and the Ohio Statehouse, the Vern Riffe Center, and the Rhodes State Office Tower to honor the life of Town and Country Fire District Lieutenant Philip Wigal.

The 35-year-old firefighter died Monday afterbeing struck while investigating a traffic crash on Interstate 71 just south of the state Route 301 exit.

Trooper Steven B. Hill, 37, from the Ashland post, was taken to a hospital with injuries that were described as not life-threatening.

The driver of the commercial vehicle was identified as Edyt A. Hernandez, 41, of Hialeah, Florida. Hernandez was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries after the crash, according to a press release.

Town & Country Fire District Chief Adam Hory said Wigal began his career with the department in August 2006 as a part-time firefighter. In 2011, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. He was hired full time in May 2014.
