Peter Franchot for Governor: Continue the Fight for Housing Justice

Maryland

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

We celebrated the anniversary of the Fair Housing Act of 1968, which prohibited housing discrimination based on race, religion, national origin, or sex. This legislation was one of the greatest achievements of the Civil Rights era by outlawing racist housing policies like redlining that excluded African Americans and other minorities from many communities.

Maryland needs a leader who will continue the fight for housing justice. As Governor, I’ll level the playing field for housing by offering the State of Maryland as a guarantor for mortgages in target communities, with a goal to create parity across race and ZIP code for new home ownership rates by 2030. As part of my effort, I’ll ensure fair and equitable appraisal standards in all communities, aligning Maryland with federal efforts like the Interagency Task Force on Property Appraisal and Valuation Equity (PAVE).

Much work remains if we are to fulfill the promise of American democracy for all of our citizens. Housing justice is economic justice, and I look forward to ensuring that more Marylanders can get access to the affordable, quality housing that they deserve.
