While the CDC guideline is still being interpreted, tomorrow is the end of the state's eviction moratorium allowing landlords to start the eviction process for those 4 months behind on rent. I have spent the past year helping and listening to landlords and tenants alike as they grapple through the legal process. I've heard from our kupuna/seniors who rely on the small rental unit on their property to supplement their limited income. I've heard from the single parent struggling to make ends meet while the landlord continues to make life difficult for them so they'll eventually move. I understand the frustration from both sides.
I do want to thank the Judiciary, the many non-profits, and attorneys who met throughout the pandemic to try and work out a practical solution. And still, there is so much uncertainty as to what will happen next.
I'd like to see a solution where: 1) landlords can more easily apply for the millions of dollars in rental relief currently not being utilized to help make them whole; 2) relocation assistance for renters for help with the 1st month's rent and security deposit; 3) dismissal of any court claims by the landlord against the tenant.
If you do get an eviction notice tomorrow, contact the Legal Aid office or the court self-help centers for legal help. Sign up for mediation as soon as possible.
This is a housing crisis that affects all of us and will require leadership and creative solutions from our leaders.
