I take with me my grandfather’s fighting spirit and heart of service, to fight for what is right always in service to the people.Let’s treat all our veterans right, with honor, dignity, and respect.
This Veterans Day, I honor my grandfather and namesake, Col. Sergio L. Alcubilla, who as a 20 year old, joined the guerrilla resistance in the Philippines during WWII under the American flag. He was a man of honor and principle and I miss him dearly.Despite his service under the command of American forces, the US Congress passed the "The Rescission Act of 1946" that invalidated his service and denied him and thousands of other veterans access to military benefits and honors. It wasn't until nearly 70 years later that Congress passed "The Filipino Veterans Equity Compensation Act of 2009" that finally made it right. In 2019, my grandfather's service was finally recognized and honored by the US with the Congressional Gold Medal.Let's honor our veterans by treating them right.
