ATLANTA — Fair Fight Action—the national voting rights organization founded by Stacey Abrams—today released a statement responding to recent anti-voter legislation passed by Arizona’s Republican-controlled state legislature.

On Wednesday, Republican lawmakers in Arizona passed HB 2492 on a party-line vote, sending the bill to Governor Doug Ducey’s desk to be signed into law. Unless vetoed by Governor Ducey, HB 2492 could cancel millions of eligible registered voters from the rolls unless they provide extensive and unnecessary documentation proving their citizenship.

It also creates burdens on new voters registering to vote with additional requirements that could disproportionately impact Native American voters, voters experiencing poverty or homelessness, voters who do not drive, and student voters from another state who have enrolled in Arizona colleges.

Fair Fight Action Executive Director Cianti Stewart-Reid released the following statement:

“House Bill 2492 is just the latest thinly veiled attempt to push access to the ballot even further out of reach for communities already being disproportionately harmed by Arizona’s existing anti-voter laws, including last year’s SB 1485 which could purge over 140,000 voters from the Permanent Early Voting List. Arizona Republicans—who have introduced over 100 anti-voter bills this year alone—continue to advance the interests of conspiracy theorists obsessed with the Big Lie above those of their constituents and election officials. Instead of protecting election officials, this bill will force them to implement costly and unnecessary new procedures that undermine the integrity of Arizona elections at the expense of taxpayers.

From Georgia’s HB 1464 to New Hampshire’s SB 418 to Arizona’s HB 2492, Republican-controlled state legislatures across the country are forcing unnecessary and discriminatory impositions upon people who are just trying to exercise their right to vote.”
