Senate President Pro Tempore Jake Corman (R-34) and Senate Majority Leader Kim Ward (R-39) issued the following statement on the passing of former Senator Stewart Greenleaf:

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Senator Stewart Greenleaf, a man of deep faith and strong convictions who leaves behind an incredible legacy, both in terms of the laws he passed and the example he set for others.

“As a former prosecutor and the longest-serving chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Greenleaf was the father of civil justice reform and a champion for crime victims, authoring laws to fight human trafficking and allow child victims to testify by closed-circuit television. While he was tough on crime, he also fought hard for criminal justice reform, including helping Pennsylvanians who suffered from addiction – advocating treatment options over jail terms.

“In addition, countless numbers of Pennsylvanians owe their lives to Senator Greenleaf’s Donate Life PA law, which helped to help increase organ and tissue donation in Pennsylvania.

“Senator Greenleaf always tried to do the right thing for the all people of Pennsylvania, especially those who were most in need. When he saw injustice, he sought to right it – motivated not by politics, but by his own moral compass. Pennsylvania is better for his service and his selflessness, and he will be deeply missed by a grateful Commonwealth.”
