More criticism is aimed at Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee on $3,000 bonuses for state workers.
It comes from the campaign trail.
“It seems to me like the governor doesn’t even know what he’s signing, so it’s just a level of competence that I think we should all be worried about,” Democratic rival Helena Foulkes told us on Wednesday.
Her comments came in the wake of state police troopers getting the bonuses in exchange for wearing body cameras.
“A lot of people in this state are hurting, so I would rather make sure if we’re going to spend money that it goes to a broader range of low income and middle-class people all across the state who could really use money in their pockets right now,” Foulkes said.
The former CVS executive is running to replace McKee.
Foulkes, meanwhile, is pitching a plan to spend $500 million, or about half of Rhode Island's federal COVID aid, on education.
“No one has taken a bigger hit across every ZIP code across our state than our kids, and I can’t think of anything more critical right now than investing in them,” she told.
Foulkes' plan includes expanded before- and after-school programs, assistants in all kindergarten through third-grade classrooms, and behavioral and mental health support in every school.
