Rhode Island Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea is calling on Governor Dan McKee to pause the gas tax.
Gorbea -- and McKee -- are both candidates in the 2022 Rhode Island gubernatorial Democratic primary.
As GoLocal reported earlier this week, Rhode Island gas prices hit record highs -- but a recent study warned the U.S. ban on Russian gas imports will only have a "modest" impact.
“Protecting Rhode Islanders from the burden of rising gas prices is not a partisan issue," said Gorbea.
"Now is the time for leadership that stands up to hostile forces like Russia, while still ensuring economic security for Ocean State families," she said. "The Governor should pause the gas tax to provide immediate relief to the many Rhode Islanders facing higher prices at the pump right now."
"A simple action like that could be the difference for working Rhode Islanders to afford to get to their jobs," said Gorbea. "It will keep our economy rolling and keep families from having to choose between gas and food or gas and rent."
