Geoff Diehl for Governor: Driver's Licenses to Illegal Immigrants

Massachusetts

The Senate President has indicated that the Senate will take up a bill to provide driver's licenses to illegal immigrants next week.

I staunchly oppose the issuance of driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants, and I am particularly concerned that the Legislature is moving ahead with plans to issue these licenses at the same time the Biden Administration is proposing to end Title 42. There is a profound risk of a sudden influx of illegal immigrants across our nation’s porous borders, and a danger that they will immediately have access to rights and privileges here in Massachusetts that are normally reserved for citizens of the Commonwealth.

I am calling on the Biden Administration to keep Title 42 in place and to take additional steps to secure our nation’s borders. I am also calling on state officials to suspend any plans to issue driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.

Beyond this, I am calling on federal and state officials to immediately release information on how many illegal immigrants have been transported to Massachusetts in each month since January 1, 2021, which communities they were transported to, and what plans the government has for such transportation over the next twelve months. If our state has any designs of giving driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants – which I flatly oppose as a matter of public safety – then the citizens of our state have a clear right to know where these immigrants will be located if and when they are transported to Massachusetts.
