As many of you are aware, the vast majority of my Democrat colleagues think that guns are dangerous and should be banned. However, as your Governor I will stand firm in my support of the 2nd Amendment that affirms our right to keep and bear arms. Yes, you read that correctly, I am a conservative democrat that is against gun control.
My belief is that all citizens should be able own and keep guns (and ammunition) to protect themselves from harm. I also believe that guns are a deterrent to crime and that owning guns reduces violent crime. Each year the homicide rate in Oregon continues to climb and this year we set an all-time record of 67 homicides. With all the violence and riots occurring the last thing we need is more gun control measures.
As a native-born Oregonian and lifelong Democrat, I have served in the Army National Guard to protect your freedoms and mine. I have advocated for gun rights as a lifetime member and Past President of the Oregon State Shooting Association. I have been a member of the Tri-County Gun Club since 1975 and served as president and board member. I have also testified before the Oregon State Legislature numerous times on gun control issues.
The bottom line is that as your Governor: I promise, and I guarantee that I will VETO each and every Anti-Gun Bill that reaches my desk.
