Months before at a private dinner with Governor Wally and Ermalee Hickel, Governor Hickel said to me, “If you’ll run for governor, I’ll support you!” We shook hands and with that, my decision was made and he became my campaign chairman.
Like me, Governor Hickel came from humble beginnings but he had a vision for Alaska that propelled him do all in his power to make Alaska prosper and Alaskans succeed. To have received his encouragement, endorsement, support, and friendship remain some of the highest honors of my life.
