Jeffrey Sossa Paquette Issues A Response to Congressman Jim McGovern Press Conference Today

Worcester, MA- Having watched thousands of at-risk kids go through my own childcare centers, I am pleased House Speaker Nancy Pelosi took the time to visit the Rainbow center here in Worcester. It is always good when national leaders see first-hand the challenges faced by these kids and their parents.

But, one of the reasons I am running for Congress is the very cycle of dependency Nancy Pelosi and Jim McGovern have promoted and legislated for decades.

Too many families, such as those whose kids are in the care of centers such as mine and Rainbow, are trapped in government programs that don’t allow them to rise to self-sufficiency and achieve the dignity that comes with breaking the chains of government programs.

All too often, I’ve witnessed mothers doing everything they can to rise to self-sufficiency, only to have the rug pulled out from underneath them. A single parent goes to work and receives a simple one-dollar-per-hour raise.  Rather than benefiting from that raise, the parent risks losing childcare or SNAP benefits, or a parent fee is assessed that erases or even exceeds the added income.

Under decades of the policies of Congressman Jim McGovern and Speaker Pelosi, social safety nets have become generational traps.

It isn’t a matter of throwing more money at these challenges. It is about rewarding success rather than dependence, including allowing a true ‘step-down’ approach that allows benefit recipients to enjoy the fruits of their labor. It is also about ensuring proper educations for the children and vouchers for community college or trade school.

As a Congressman, I will introduce legislation that will reduce the dependence on government by breaking the cycle and lifting people to self-sufficiency.
