Each #MLKDay, some will cherry-pick quotes from Dr. King & reduce his legacy to that of a peaceful protestor with a dream.
He was indeed a prophetic leader & early architect of the Civil Rights movement — but there's much more to his story.
We often see excerpts from "I Have A Dream" weaponized & perverted to justify legislated white supremacy.
But the truth is Dr. King was a radical dreamer with a bold vision for revolutionary change.
A disruptive movement builder seeking to upend an unjust status quo.
In word & deed, he sought to reverse generations of policy violence & affirm that Black Lives Matter — Work we continue to carry on today.
& the progress we've made thanks to Dr. King & others is under attack daily — a reminder that gains are not guarantees.
Gains are not guarantees when inertia, inaction & insurrection thrive.
Gains are not guarantees when the white moderate is complicit in white supremacy.
Gains are not guarantees when today's boycotts are brief, faith is shallow & 2nd-class citizenship is accepted as inevitable.
Dr. King gifted us a radical dream & a disruptive blueprint for change.
I'm committed to following that blueprint & to the liberation of my people.
That means organizing & mobilizing, legislating our values, centering healing & humanity in our policymaking & leading with love.
We're still in the Civil Rights Movement, but another world is possible. We can build it through sustainable movement & transformative legislation.
Our movement is strong & I believe fiercely in what we can achieve together.
In a word: justice.
