“Incumbent US Senator James Lankford recently characterized Senate Democrats’ efforts to create an exception to the Senate’s filibuster, in order to pass critical voting rights legislation, a “threat to our Republic.” But failing to pass this vital legislation is just that. There is no more sacred or fundamental element of our democracy than the right to vote. In the recent past, states across the Nation have introduced and enacted legislation making voting more difficult, weakening minority voices, and ensuring that elections in those states are rigged for the benefit of the party in power. These actions are un-democratic and un-American.
There are more than 160 various exceptions to the Senate filibuster, none of which involve topics as critical to democracy as protecting the right to vote. Our democracy only works and survives if ALL Americans have a say in it. We must reform the filibuster now to ensure all Americans’ voices are heard. Senator Lankford may be concerned about what will happen when all Americans’ voices are heard, but I am not. I trust Americans to vote for the leaders we know we need—leaders who will be concerned with addressing the problems we face, not trying to preserve their own power.”
