Tina Kotek for Governor: Theft of Catalytic Converters from People’s Cars Was a Major Problem

When I first entered the legislature, metal theft from construction sites and the theft of catalytic converters from people’s cars was a major problem. In 2009, the legislature changed the law to prohibit people getting paid in cash for the metal they wanted to sell, and this made a big difference. But stealing catalytic converters is on the rise again.

My office has received a lot of outreach from constituents about Senate Bill 803, which would only allow scrap metal businesses to buy catalytic converters from commercial sellers. I support this bill and look forward to signing on as a sponsor when it reaches the House.

The bill was referred to the Senate Committee on Energy and Environment last week and hopefully will have a hearing soon.
