Nan Whaley for Governor: First Phase of Our Police Reform Effort

Ohio

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

We wrapped up the first phase of our police reform effort. More than 100 community members - activists, police, public defenders, clergy, everyday folks - have been meeting weekly for 8 months to evaluate and strengthen our policing policies. The five working groups have offered 143 recommendations. Many are already being implemented, and over the coming months the rest will be. It's important to us that we get this part right - we'll have more to share soon about our implementation process.

This process hasn't been perfect! Doing hard things rarely is. But we asked the Dayton community to take on this difficult, complex issue and - as always - they have stepped up to the challenge.

While I am very proud of the policy changes, I am also proud of the relationships this built. Every group said they were excited to get together in person once the pandemic ends. This is how we keep having the tough, authentic conversations that bring real change and progress.

Dayton police reform groups finish up. What’s next?
