Latta, Gibbs, Gonzalez, Demand Answers on Northern Ohio USPS Performance

Congressmen Bob Latta (OH-5), Bob Gibbs (OH-7), and Anthony Gonzalez (OH-16) wrote to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy with questions regarding the Northern Ohio Service District’s continued poor performance.

With the Northern Ohio District ranking as the second worst district in country for mail delivery according to the United States Postal Service’s own metrics, millions of Ohioans feel the impact of this degraded service. Roughly one-third of all single-piece first class mail is delayed in Northern Ohio, leaving those residing in the service area with the uncertainty of whether they can pay bills or receive government assistance or retirement benefits on time.

The Congressmen’s letter requests specific information on the reasons for the worsening delays and options on how to remedy it.

“For years, my constituents have experienced significant delays receiving their mail, and I have been working to pressure the Postal Service to improve their performance and services,” said Latta.  “Unfortunately, the Postal Service has failed time and time again to address these problems. The situation has worsened so much so that I have also called on the Postal Service to shift mail processing responsibilities from Detroit, Michigan back to Toledo, Ohio.  By joining with my other Ohio colleagues on this letter, it is my hope that the Postal Service will get their act together and finally make the necessary changes that will produce tangible service improvements for our constituents.”

“This level of USPS service is unacceptable,” said Gibbs. “My office is contacted by constituents every week with delays on important mail such as prescription drugs. It is unfathomable to me that simple postal service delays can become a life and death situation. Now that the holiday season has ended, the USPS needs to provide answers on why service continues to be so poor for Northern Ohio and what it plans on doing to fix it.”

“Over the last year I have heard from countless constituents about the slowdown in mail delivery service," Gonzalez said. “My constituents count on timely delivery to pay bills, receive prescription drugs and operate their business. I am proud to join this letter to Postmaster DeJoy in urging the USPS to address this concern.”
