Congressman Bob Latta (R-OH5) voted against H.R. 3755, the Women’s Health Protection Act, for its radical change to abortion laws across the country. This bill would allow abortion at any stage of pregnancy and would eliminate widely supported pro-life laws at every level of government.

“This bill should be named the Abortion on Demand Act because that is exactly what this extremist bill focuses on – making abortions available for any reason during any time of pregnancy,” said Latta. “Overriding state pro-life laws and prohibiting states from enacting pro-life legislation would make protections for babies with Down Syndrome and other life-altering conditions or disabilities illegal. It is radically out of step with the American public, and does not prioritize protecting women’s health, as its current title claims. Abortion ends the life of a whole, separate, unique, living human being. I will continue to fight in the U.S. House of Representatives to protect the lives of unborn children, and that is why I strongly oppose this bill.”

According to information gathered by the Charlotte Lozier Institute, by 22 days after fertilization, the heart starts beating. The heart beats about 54 million times between conception and birth. The fetal heart rate is quite variable. It rises from 98 beats per minute at 6 weeks’ gestation to 175 beats per minute at 9 weeks’ gestation, and often slows over the next several months. As early as 10 weeks’ gestation, it is possible to determine whether the unborn child is left-handed or right-handed by studying ultrasounds. Starting at 10 weeks gestational age, the fetus makes intermittent breathing motions. By 13 weeks’ gestation, the fetus will make many breathing motions in a row, taking 2-3 seconds between each breath.

Congressman Latta is a member of the Pro-Life Caucus and is a supporter of pro-life legislation in Congress. Earlier this year, Congressman Latta introduced the Support and Value Expectant (SAVE) Moms and Babies Act to prevent labeling changes, such as removing the Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies (REMS), for already approved abortion drugs. It would also prevent providers from dispensing the drugs remotely, by mail, or via telemedicine. The SAVE Moms and Babies Act would prevent the FDA from approving new chemical abortion drugs. Chemical abortions have the highest complication rate of available procedures rate than surgical abortions or any other available procedures.
