Bethel, AK - Alyse Galvin, an education advocate who challenged the late Representative Don
Young for Alaska’s sole congressional seat in 2018 and 2020, endorsed Democrat and former
Alaska legislator Mary Peltola in the special election to elect the state’s next representative in
Washington D.C.
Galvin, who campaigned as an Independent and broke fundraising records, described Peltola’s
campaign as an “historic opportunity”. Peltola is a Yup’ik fisheries advocate whose support
from rural Alaska and Alaska Natives is critical to winning both the primary and the general
election, Galvin said.
“Mary is the standout candidate to become Alaska’s next U.S. representative,” Galvin said.
“She’s the only candidate who has represented rural Alaska in our state legislature, where she
rebuilt the rural Bush Caucus, and she exudes the rare combination of warmth, tenacity and
wisdom that is needed to win and work effectively in Congress.”
Peltola represented the Bethel region in the Alaska legislature for 10 years. Since 2017, she has
served as executive director of the Kuskokwim River Inter-Tribal Fish commission, which
mobilized 118 tribes to restore abundant salmon runs in Western Alaska.
Galvin’s endorsement of Peltola follows an endorsement by Democrat Beth Kerttula, who
worked directly with Peltola during Kerttula’s 16 years in the Alaska legislature. “Mary Peltola is
one of the most effective legislators I ever worked with,” said Kerttula. “But the best part of
Mary is that she really cares about us, cares about Alaska. She would be an excellent and
strong leader for us all.”
Galvin added: “Mary has the values, grit, and experience to provide the representation Alaska
needs.”
