Former mayor and congressman Lou Barletta, leading Republican candidate for governor of Pennsylvania, demonstrated why he is leading in public polling during tonight’s debate among the four top GOP contenders. Though he was frequently the target of attacks from the other candidates on stage, Barletta bested his opponents in the forum at the studios of ABC27 WHTM-TV in Harrisburg.
“Pennsylvania voters already know Lou Barletta and his record of accomplishments, and they know what kind of governor he will be. That’s why so many are rallying behind his campaign as the primary draws near,” said Barletta campaign advisor Tim Murtaugh. “Others on stage took swing after swing at him and came away empty. Their attacks show their desperation as their campaign clocks are running out.”
Barletta reminded voters that he has been fighting for conservative issues since his days as mayor of Hazleton, when he was the first mayor in the country to defend his hometown against illegal immigration. He was among the first Members of Congress to endorse Donald Trump for president in 2016, and earned President Trump’s endorsement in his bid for the U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania in 2018.
Barletta also made clear that as governor he will revive Pennsylvania’s economy by unleashing our God-given energy resources, removing the Commonwealth from the job-killing Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, and keeping government out of the way of entrepreneurs and job creators. He will also restore parents’ rights to be involved in their children’s education and introduce school choice, so children are not stuck in failing schools. Barletta will also ban the teaching of damaging and divisive topics, such as Critical Race Theory, and require that American history is taught accurately. And Barletta will crack down on violent criminals, empower police to do their jobs, eliminate “sanctuary cities” which harbor illegal immigrants, and call in the National Guard to restore peace to cities that have fallen victim to unchecked violence.
“In this debate, Pennsylvanians saw one man who is ready to be governor today, and three others whose campaigns are already fading,” Murtaugh said. “This Republican primary is about selecting the best candidate to beat Democrat Josh Shapiro, and the debate put all speculation to rest. Lou Barletta will be the Republican nominee and he will beat Shapiro in November.”
