Downers Grove, IL — Eight days after U.S. Congressman Sean Casten (IL-06) called on Marie Newman and Iymen Chehade to publicly release the details of the settlement at the heart of their US House of Representatives bribery investigation, newly filed FEC reports raise further questions about Rep. Newman’s campaign & underscore the seriousness of her federal bribery investigation.
According to the FEC, Rep. Sean Casten raised $787,000 in the final quarter prior to the June primary election, with over $2,000,000 cash on hand with an average lifetime donation of $43. Rep. Marie Newman raised $231,000 — spending $249,000 with $553,000 left cash on hand.
This quarter, Rep. Newman spent an additional $24,500 in payments to Iymen Chehade, with whom the bipartisan House Ethics Committee investigation is focused. Rep. Newman also reported $99,000 in debt, over $88,000 of which she owes to her legal defense team.
Since entering into her secret settlement with Chehade, Rep. Newman has made more than $78,500 in payments to Iymen Chehade and over $200,000 in payments & debt to her legal defense team.
“The FEC reports filed last week by the Newman campaign raise more serious questions about Rep. Newman’s federal investigation and her continued payments to Iymen Chehade,” said Jacob Vurpillat, spokesperson for Rep. Casten. “Rep. Newman has refused to answer questions from both the press & her voters – taking zero accountability even as a left-leaning ethics organization has repeatedly expressed alarm at her actions. We once again ask Rep. Newman to release the details of her settlement with Iymen Chehade.
