Ron Wyden: A long-delayed step toward accountability for the Saudi regime

In December 2019, I wrote – and Congress passed – a bill requiring the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) to declassify its report identifying the individuals responsible for the brutal murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018.

Rather than follow the law, the last administration used every trick in the book to shield the Saudi regime from being held accountable for this heinous crime.

Now, as she promised during her confirmation hearing, DNI Avril Haines has released the declassified report. It confirms what we have suspected all along: that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ordered the murder of Jamal Khashoggi.

Jamal never backed down from his commitment to holding the powerful to account. That deeply-rooted courage cost him his life.

I applaud the Biden-Harris administration's swift actions to reverse the damage of Donald Trump's fawning admiration of and submission to dictators worldwide. Releasing this report is the first step to exposing the lawlessness and brutality of the Saudi regime. I won't stop working to shed light on the truth, and I look forward to working hand-in-hand with the administration to continue demanding accountability from the Saudi regime.
