When Republicans say they want to talk about tax cuts, what they mean is they want to help the ultra-wealthy and multinational corporations pay less than their fair share.
One of my top priorities in the Senate is making things more fair for working Americans. That includes overhauling our tax code to level the playing field for Americans that have been struggling on the margins and ignored for too long.
For example: approximately 80 percent of tax cuts from Republicans' 2017 tax law went to white Americans.
That's one of countless ways in which Republican policies reinforce our nation's institutional racism. The fact of the matter is that so much of our nation's tax policies have been structured to ensure those with money—typically majority white and male—can get richer by doing less, while others struggle just to get by.
Democrats in Congress have already started to address the inequities and inequalities in our tax code with the American Rescue Plan, which we've talked about before. In that landmark law, we expanded the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit to help get families off the financial roller coaster.
But we have to keep going. Addressing systemic inequities will take more than just updating our outdated tax code.
That's why I'm committed to this fight, as long as it takes.
We're going to talk to the experts. Consider every angle. And find equitable solutions that prioritize rooting out economic injustice and righting wrongs instead of just propping up the ultra-wealthy.
