Ayanna Pressley for Congress: An economy that works for everyone

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

More than perhaps ever before, our country is defined by economic inequality on a massive scale. Stagnant wages, the legacy of discriminatory banking practices, the cost of higher education, child care, and housing, and the erosion of the social safety net stifles economic mobility and perpetuates devastating poverty, even while those at the very top amass enormous fortunes.

In order to address such entrenched economic disparities, we must center the experiences of those who bear the burden of inequality: the low-wage contract worker who has no recourse when a government shutdown robs them of their paycheck; the domestic worker exploited by their employer; the adult caregiver who struggles to cover medical expenses and make the rent; the young person whose dreams are deferred because of crushing student loan debt. We must hold Wall Street and the big banks accountable, and call out the racist and abusive policies and practices that deny economic opportunity for entire communities.

I am focused on building a more equitable, empathetic economy – increasing the minimum wage to $15/hour, strengthening protections for workers, driving down costs associated with education, child care, housing, and healthcare that currently put enormous strain on working families, and creating a more transparent, equitable banking system that is accessible to people in all of our communities.
