Congresswoman Diana Harshbarger released the following statement about her vote against H.R. 4.

“First House Democrats passed H.R. 1 before it stalled in the Senate, now they’re repackaging some of its worst parts to try again. Elections should be run at the state level, not by unelected federal bureaucrats who would be empowered to override commonsense election reforms like voter ID requirements. At a time when many Americans have lost faith in elections, another attempt at a partisan power grab is the wrong prescription for increasing election integrity. Instead, Congress should work on solutions to ensure our elections are fair, transparent, and that it is easier to vote legally and harder to cheat. Only this will restore the American people’s faith in our elections.”

Congresswoman Harshbarger has consistently supported such reforms. In April, she co-sponsored H.R. 322, the Republican Study Committee’s Save Democracy Act, which would bring transparency to elections and restore election integrity. In June, she co-sponsored H.R. 93, the Eliminating Foreign Intervention in Elections Act, which would eliminate federal funding for any municipality that allows illegal immigrants and non-citizens to vote in local or statewide elections. On August 23rd, Congresswoman Harshbarger joined her colleagues in the Election Integrity Caucus in sending a letter to Speaker Pelosi urging her to not force a vote on H.R. 4 and instead work on bipartisan targeted election reforms.
