Last week, U.S. Representative Tim Burchett(TN-02)criticized Special Envoy to Iran Robert Malley for speaking with Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leaders about Iran's nuclear capabilities. No details about Special Envoy Malley's phone call with CCP leaders have been made public.
Today, Rep. Burchett sent a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken seeking answers about Special Envoy Malley's secret discussions with the CCP and other foreign governments. In his letter, Rep. Burchett stressed the need for transparency at the Department of State and the importance of keeping Congress informed about foreign policy decisions.
"I believe that the CCP is untrustworthy and one of the last entities we should be consulting regarding Iran's nuclear capabilities," Rep. Burchett wrote to Sec. Blinken. "Special Envoy Malley's actions give me great concern over transparency at the Department of State, and I have questions about the full extent of his activities."
Additionally, Rep. Burchett reaffirmed why maximum pressure on Iran through sanctions is necessary.
"Iran has been our preeminent state foe in the Middle East for decades, and I do not believe that sanctions relief makes sense when the regime uses extremist groups like Hezbollah, Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Kataib Hezbollah, and the Houthis to export their terror from the Levant to Iraq and Yemen respectively," Rep. Burchett wrote.
