Today, the U.S. House of Representatives voted on H.R. 6, the American Dream and Promise Act of 2021. This bill provides amnesty to over 3 million individuals illegally present in the United States.

U.S. Representative Tim Burchett (TN-02) voted against this legislation, saying it sends the wrong message given the current crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border:

"Crossing the border illegally is just as illegal as breaking into someone's home," Rep. Burchett said. "This bill sends the wrong message to the thousands of migrants currently attempting to enter the country over our southern border. It rewards those who broke the law, including gang members, with amnesty instead of enforcing the laws on the books."

According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protections data, thousands of people cross the southern border illegally every day.

"Our southern border is a magnet right now. Some migrants released into the interior of the country have tested positive for COVID-19, while others are involved in drug and human trafficking. We need to demagnetize our border, but I'm worried this bill could make this dangerous crisis worse," Rep. Burchett said.
