Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced Central Michigan University has been awarded a $10 million grant as part of the Great Lakes Coastal Wetland Monitoring Program funded through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI).
"Protecting the Great Lakes is a top priority for Michigan residents and this grant will help CMU continue its vital research on the health of plants, animals, and water quality in the Great Lakes' coastal wetlands,” said Congressman John Moolenaar. “I have advocated for funding for the GLRI as a member of the House Appropriations Committee so projects like this can help protect the Great Lakes for the enjoyment of Michigan families and future generations.”
Last year, Congressman Moolenaar supported $330 million in funding for GLRI, which was passed by Congress and signed into law.
The grant for CMU funds research to monitor approximately 1,000 coastal wetlands over the next five years in support of the Great Lakes Coastal Wetland Monitoring Program, which began in 2011. The research conducted by Central Michigan University provides essential information for Great Lakes coastal wetland restoration and other management efforts.
