Today, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released the latest monthly jobs report, showing an increase of 266,000 jobs, but falling short of the 1,000,000 jobs economists were expecting to be created during the month of April. The national unemployment rate increased to 6.1 percent.
The weak numbers come in the first full month since President Joe Biden signed legislation that pays Americans an extra $300 a week if they remain unemployed.
“President Biden currently gives Americans more reasons to stay home instead of creating job opportunities that will help them provide for their families. There are ‘Help Wanted’ signs in small businesses across Michigan because while they are open and working hard, President Biden is taking their tax dollars and paying extra money to those at home,” said Congressman John Moolenaar.
“Another major factor is the Biden Administration’s decision to disregard the science that showed it was safe for schools to reopen months ago. This has hurt students' educational development and forced their parents to stay home. It’s time to end these policies and allow Americans to choose the economic and educational opportunities that are best for them and their families.”
