The City of Wenatchee was awarded a $92.4 million Infrastructure for Rebuilding America (INFRA) grant Friday for the Apple Capital Loop Project. The $285 million package is a collection of transportation improvements around an 11-mile loop of the between Wenatchee and East Wenatchee.

8th District Representative Dr. Kim Schrier said the project went from a longshot just a few years ago to receiving the largest grant out of the 20 federal INFRA grants awarded nationally this year.

“To put it in perspective, $92 million went to the Apple Capital Loop and $11 million went to the West Seattle Bridge,” stated Schrier.

Officials had pitched the Apple Capital Loop Project from several different angles, including public health, safety, better emergency response and community enrichment.

The package includes a 2.5 mile bypass of SR 285, intersection improvements to SR 285 and North Wenatchee Avenue, construction of a railroad underpass on McKittrick Street, a roundabout at US 2 and Easy Street, and the widening of a segment of SR 28.

The city had requested $140 in INFRA grant money. State and other funding still needs to be secured for the roughly $285 million project.

Project partners include the City of East Wenatchee, Chelan County, Douglas County, Washington Department of Transportation, Chelan-Douglas Regional Port Authority, LINK Transit, and Chelan-Douglas Transportation Council.
