U.S. Representative Peter Meijer (R-MI), a member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today participated in a hearing titled, “Reclaiming Congressional War Powers,” where he asked the witnesses to share their views on allowing outdated Authorizations for Use of Military Force (AUMFs) to remain on the books. The witnesses ultimately agreed that these AUMFs present risks but no benefits.
Last week, Rep. Meijer joined Reps. Mike Gallagher (R-WI), Jared Golden (D-ME), and Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) in introducing bipartisan legislation that would repeal the outdated Authorizations for Use of Military Force (AUMFs). The bill would end the 1957, 1991, and 2002 AUMFs, formally ceasing congressional authorization for the Gulf and Iraq Wars, as well as an open-ended Cold War-era authorization of force in the Middle East.
“It is past time for Congress to repeal these AUMFs, formally end congressional authorization for these wars, and more closely assert Congress’s Article I responsibilities so our government is best equipped to meet threats of today and tomorrow,” said Rep. Meijer.
