U.S. Representative Peter Meijer (R-MI), a member of the House Problem Solvers Caucus, today joined colleagues in sending a letter urging Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and other members of congressional leadership to return to regular order, allowing for open debate and bipartisan action on issues of critical importance to the American people.
“I’m proud to be on the Problem Solvers Caucus that is working to move our country forward and break through counterproductive gridlock,” said Rep. Meijer. “We welcome bipartisan efforts with our Democratic colleagues and President Biden to deliver real results for the American people. It is imperative that we return to regular order to make progress on some of the critical issues that have eluded Congress for far too long.”
The letter was endorsed by all 58 members of the bipartisan caucus, including 29 Republicans and 29 Democrats. The group calls for adhering to the regular order process, which will produce legislation through committee hearings, committee markups, and floor amendments. In a narrowly divided Congress, this process is crucial to getting more legislation from Congress to the President’s desk.
Excerpt from the letter:
We believe a return to regular order can help build the necessary support from both parties to enact meaningful, bipartisan legislation that creates new possibilities for Americans and addresses many of the challenges impacting our country. The best way to do this is by having a deliberative and open process that promotes transparency and allows members to help shape legislation through committee hearings, markups, and floor amendments. We should not be afraid to deliberate and debate […] The opportunities are endless if we adhere to a process that reflects the best for all Americans — promoting Member input, encouraging collaboration, and championing cooperation.
