WASHINGTON D.C. – Congresswoman Carol Miller (R-WV) joined Ways and Means Congressman David Schweikert (R-AZ) to send a letter to Ambassador Katherine Tai, the United States Trade Representative, urging her to enforce compliance of all United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) commitments, especially within Mexico's energy sector.
The letter reads in part, "We write to express deep concern regarding the Government of Mexico's failure to comply with certain United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement ("USMCA" or "Agreement") commitments when regulating Mexico's energy sector. We are particularly concerned about the proposed Power Industry and Hydrocarbons Laws, which if implemented, will undermine core non-discrimination commitments that Mexico has made in the Agreement's Goods, Investment, and State-Owned Enterprises Chapters. We are strong supporters of USMCA and believe that it is essential that the United States holds Mexico accountable to live up to all its USMCA commitments, including in the energy sector."
This letter was also signed by Ways and Means Committee members Reps. Adrian Smith (R-NE) and Jodey Arrington (R-TX).

Background
President López Obrador's recent efforts to reform and overturn Mexico's energy policies will adversely impact the environment, the people of Mexico, and the agreements within the USMCA. Ambassador Tai is responsible for overseeing the enforcement of USMCA commitments, and her office gives her the power to apply pressure to the Government of Mexico to adhere to these agreements.
