ICYMI: Congresswoman Miller Urges Administration to Work with Congress on China Trade

West Virginia

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Carol Miller (R-WV) joined Ways and Means Republican Leader Kevin Brady (R-TX) and all of her Republican colleagues to send a letter to U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) Katherine Tai urging the Biden Administration to enforce the U.S.-China Phase One Agreement and hold China accountable for its predatory trade actions around the world.

The letter reads in part"We write to emphasize the urgent need to consult closely with Congress to set a clear, action-oriented plan to confront China's predatory trade practices and trade aggression throughout the world. This month marks the second anniversary of the entry into force of the Economic and Trade Agreement Between the Government of the United States of America and the Government of the People's Republic of China (the "Phase One Agreement"). The Biden Administration's failure to share a detailed analysis of China's performance under this Agreement leaves Congress with insufficient data to fulfill its Constitutional mandate to regulate commerce with China. We have great confidence in your abilities to address the many challenges China presents to the United States and other market economies, and we hope you will expand detailed communication on these matters so that Congress and the Administration can be partners in developing effective U.S. responses."

Congresswoman Miller recently joined Ways and Means Rep. Darin LaHood (R-IL) to introduce the U.S. Trade Leadership in the Indo-Pacific and China Act. The bill would provide a blueprint for Congress and the Administration to advance U.S. trade leadership in the Indo-Pacific region and with China through encouragement of swift passage of the Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) and directing the Administration to make efforts to lead and modernize key trade agreements in the region. The bill also directs the USTR to articulate a long-term trade plan with China as the initial Phase One Agreement comes to a close.
