Who should make the decision about whether and when to have a child? Here's a clue – it's not politicians or Supreme Court Justices.
I remember the days before Roe v. Wade. It was an unsafe, scary time for many who found themselves with an unintended pregnancy and didn't know what to do. We fought hard to change that—to provide safety and protect reproductive freedom.
And today, on the eve of the 49th anniversary of the monumental Roe v. Wade decision, we ready ourselves for what could be another big fight ahead if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade.
I'm grateful that my home state of Oregon will protect the right to a safe abortion, but many states will not. More than 20 states have trigger laws that will ban abortion immediately if Roe v. Wade is overturned. Remember, when abortion is banned, it doesn't go away—it becomes less safe.
I'll never stop fighting for everyone's right to make their own health care decisions, especially about whether and when to have a child.
As a member of the Congressional Pro-Choice caucus, I helped the House pass the Women's Health Protection Act to put the right established by Roe v. Wade into law, But this is not just about defending Roe; it's about access. We must make health care more accessible for everyone, and we are working on that too.
