Suzanne Bonamici: I’m inspired by the women who came before me

Today is International Women's Day.

It's a day to celebrate women's achievements worldwide and continue our fight for equality.

We honor the brave and extraordinary women who inspire us, like journalist Ida B. Wells, NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson, marathon trailblazer Bobbi Gibb, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, and many others. We remember those who fought for voting rights, fair pay, and reproductive freedom. We still have work to do, but today there are more women serving in all three branches of the federal government and in state legislatures across the country.

Every day in Congress, I'm proud to fight for the rights and freedoms of women across Oregon and the nation.

Recently I helped the House pass the Women's Health Protection Act to protect abortion rights for everyone, no matter their zip code. You were likely as disappointed and concerned as I was last month when the Senate did not have the votes needed to pass the bill.

It's frustrating to see our rights attacked again and again. But we will not give up. We can't. Everyone has the right to bodily autonomy. We —not politicians or judges— get to decide if or when to start a family.

Right now, Roe v. Wade is in danger of being overturned. That won't end abortion; what it will do is turn back the clock to the days of unsafe abortions.

We must protect reproductive freedoms through the law. To do that, we need to expand our Democratic majority in Congress so both chambers can pass bills like the Women's Health Protection Act.

I'm inspired by the women who came before me to fight this fight. With your help, we can do this. Donate today to help grow our majority in Congress.
