WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Peter Meijer (R-MI), a member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, today participated in a hearing with Admiral Karl L. Schultz, the 26th Commandant of the United States Coast Guard, testifying as a witness. Rep. Meijer asked Admiral Schultz about Coast Guard operations and mission readiness in the Great Lakes region.

“The Coast Guard plays a vital operational role in the Great Lakes region and its efforts have a direct impact on Michigan and other northern border states.
“What operational challenges is the Coast Guard currently facing in the Great Lakes region? Are there any persistent challenges to mission readiness in the region?
“What can Congress do to ensure that the Coast Guard has the resources it needs to carry out its mission along our northern border?
“How has the COVID-19 pandemic (and associated border restrictions) impacted the Coast Guard’s operations in the Great Lakes region? How has the Coast Guard adapted to these challenges?”
