WASHINGTON, D.C. – Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, FBI Director Christopher Wray, and National Counterterrorism Center Director Christine Abizaid today testified before the House Committee on Homeland Security in a hearing titled, “Worldwide Threats to the Homeland: 20 Years after 9/11.” U.S. Representative Peter Meijer (R-MI), a member of the committee, pressed the witnesses for specifics about the botched U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and the crisis at the southern border.
Specifically, Rep. Meijer asked Secretary Mayorkas to provide a detailed breakdown of the evacuees from Afghanistan who are coming to the United States. Rep. Meijer, Ranking Member of the Oversight, Management, and Accountability Subcommittee, referred to the letter he sent Secretary Mayorkas last week, in which he requested this information and urged the Secretary to respond promptly with the necessary details. The full text of the letter is available here.
Regarding the current situation at the U.S. southern border, Rep. Meijer pressed Secretary Mayorkas on the consistently high numbers of attempted border crossings that Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has encountered this year and asked what the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is doing to maintain operational control and ensure that our southern border is secure. The Secretary admitted that the Biden Administration is no longer attempting to claim that these numbers represent “seasonal increases” but instead represent “structurally different numbers” than previous years.
