WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Peter Meijer (R-MI), a member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today participated in a hearing titled, “Assessing Progress and Challenges in State Department Management, Operations, and Reform.” Rep. Meijer asked the witness, Brian McKeon, Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources at the Department of State, questions about the Administration’s handling of this summer’s botched withdrawal from Afghanistan.
The full text of Rep. Meijer’s remarks as prepared is below:
“Are you aware of any internal documents from the State Department’s Office of Global Women’s Issues from last spring predicting disastrous consequences for Afghan women and urging early evacuations?
“Will you please look into that and provide my office with those documents, if they do in fact exist?
“Back in June, you briefed a bipartisan group of House members, including myself, where we discussed the serious challenges plaguing the SIV processing system, the potential collapse of the Afghan government, and the need for streamlined and orderly evacuations to start taking place immediately. Is the State Department making any efforts to ensure that SIV applicants can process their documents at more viable locations?”
