WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Peter Meijer (R-MI) today cosponsored Rep. Katie Porter’s (D-CA) bill, H.R. 1516, the Stop Foreign Interference in Ballot Measures Act, which would prohibit foreign spending on any state or local ballot initiative or referendum. Rep. Meijer joins this legislative proposal following the announcement from the Federal Election Commission (FEC) that allows foreign donors to support ballot committees.
“Americans deserve full confidence in the security of our elections, “said Rep. Meijer. “Yesterday’s decision by the FEC to allow foreign donors the ability to finance ballot committees raises a number of flags about the future of our democratic process. During this time when political discourse is incredibly fractured, we must do more to instill confidence in our elections – that starts with ensuring foreign bad actors do not have a hand in the process.”
“Foreign donors shouldn't have any influence over our elections, no matter whether it's at the federal, state, or local level,” said Rep. Porter. “It is clear that congressional action is needed to crack down on foreign contributions to ballot campaigns nationwide. This bipartisan bill will reduce the influence of foreign money in our elections, strengthen the integrity of our democracy, and promote national security.”
