WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Congressman Hal Rogers (KY-05) announced today the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) will award $1.5 million to the Sandy Hook Water District in Elliott County for water system improvements.
These federal funds come from an Appalachian Regional Commission infrastructure program established by Senator McConnell to devote resources to distressed counties in Central Appalachia. As a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, the Senator has helped direct more than $76 million to Appalachian communities through this ARC fund.
The current Sandy Hook Water Treatment Plant is sixty years old and in disrepair. The funding announced today will allow the Sandy Hook Water District to construct a new treatment plant, water storage tank, and extra waterline, providing steadier fresh water resources to Elliott County residents.
“I established a special fund within the ARC to improve Appalachia’s water infrastructure because I know how important it is for Kentucky’s families and businesses to have consistent, high-quality water resources. I’m proud communities around Eastern Kentucky have already reaped the benefits of this program and am glad Elliott County will now receive funding to improve their water system,” said Senator McConnell. “The ARC supports vital projects across Appalachia, and I will continue to advocate for robust ARC funding alongside my friend, Congressman Rogers, to serve the Kentuckians who need our help.”

This massive project will ensure families and businesses in Elliott County have an updated, reliable water system for years to come,” said Congressman Hal Rogers. “Senator McConnell and I have protected funding for the Appalachian Regional Commission for many years, because of critical investments like this in rural Kentucky that give our small communities the support they need to take care of Eastern Kentuckians.”
“With our county’s aging water infrastructure system, pipes, and pumps, these dollars approved via ARC could not come at a better time. This much needed upgrade will serve the citizens of Sandy Hook for many years to come with safe and stable sourced drinking water.
