WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Carol Miller (R-WV) today joined the Mason County Economic Development Authority to tour the site of the future Nucor steel mill in Apple Grove, West Virginia.
"It was wonderful to join John to see firsthand where Nucor will be setting down roots in Mason County," said Congresswoman Miller. "This $2.7 billion project, which will create over 800 jobs, is proof that West Virginia is open for business. I was thrilled to be a part of the team that helped make Apple Grove site ready and lay the ground work for this important investment. I will continue to work with state and local leaders to support this project and encourage others like it. Together, we will bring more opportunity, businesses, and jobs to the Mountain State."
"In recent years, we coordinated with the Congresswoman and state officials to apply for and eventually receive an Army Corps of Engineers grant to bring sewer access to Apple Grove," said John Musgrave, Mason County Economic Development Authority Executive Director. "The project has had a huge impact because it made Apple Grove site ready, or more attractive for businesses to build on, because they would have access to sewer infrastructure."
In 2019, Congresswoman Miller coordinated with the Mason County Economic Development Authority, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Huntington District, and other state and local leaders to secure funding for an Apple Grove Wastewater Infrastructure Development Project.
Nucor is an advanced steel manufacturer that prides itself on growing from a small steel mill to America's largest steel producer and recycler. Their $2.7 billion investment in Mason County will create over 800 permanent jobs and 1,000 construction jobs in the interim. The facility is expected to be fully operational in 2024 with the capacity to produce up to 3 million tons of sheet steel per year for the automotive, appliance, HVAC, heavy equipment, agricultural, transportation, and construction markets.
