$18 Million in additional funding will ensure continued progress on reclaiming AML sites, bringing economic development and jobs to West Virginia

Washington, D.C. — Congressman David B. McKinley, P.E. (WV-01) applauds today’s announcement of an additional $18 million in funding to reclaim abandoned mine lands. This is on top of $140 million in funding that was announced last month.

“Just last week, I visited an at an old mine land site in Monongalia County to see firsthand how this funding is going to clean up contaminated sites and promote jobs and economic opportunity,” said Rep. McKinley. “This funding is essential to finally making real progress in restoring and repurposing legacy mining sites across West Virginia.”

“West Virginia has more than 173,000 acres of unreclaimed mine land - which is more than half the size of New York City. Cleaning up abandoned mine lands will not only put West Virginians to work in the short term but provides promise for future economic development opportunities and improve quality of life,” said Rep. McKinley.

Background:

Today’s announcement follows the $140 million announced for West Virginia earlier this year to reclaim abandoned mine lands. Nearly $700 million has been allotted to West Virginia to be dispersed over the next five years as a result of the infrastructure bill. This historic level of additional funding will help ensure the health and safety of West Virginia’s coal communities while driving economic growth and creating good-paying jobs.
