Campaign Announcement Remarks As Prepared For Delivery
Good afternoon, and thank you all for being here today. For those of you who don’t know me, I'm Mike Flood. I'm proud to be joined by my wonderful wife of 18 years, Mandi, and our two sons, Brenden and Blake. Their support means the world to me.
I was born in Omaha and raised in Norfolk, where I returned home after college at Notre Dame and law school here in Lincoln. We've spent our lives here, and I've built my business here, because Nebraska is an incredible place to live and work. When Nebraskans see something that needs doing, nobody has to ask us--we just step up to the plate and get it done.
Early in my career, I noticed that there weren't many radio stations serving rural communities like Norfolk, my home town. I started my business, Flood Communications, to meet that need, and we grew from one radio station, US-92, into a statewide network of 15 radio stations and five TV stations called News Channel Nebraska. We saw a need, and we did something about it. We've created hundreds of jobs along the way.
It's the same reason I ran for the Legislature. I saw a need for strong, conservative representation for my home town, so I ran.
Two years later, I put my name forward to become Speaker of the Legislature to get things done, and we did. We delivered historic tax relief. We preserved the death penalty. We secured our nation's energy future with state approval of the Keystone XL pipeline. We codified the right to concealed carry and defended the Second Amendment. We cut spending. And we passed what was then the most sweeping pro-life legislation in America to protect the unborn. It needed to be done, so we did it.
Some of you may remember that, in 2012, I put my name forward to become Nebraska's next governor. On the very evening I announced my campaign, Mandi detected a lump in her breast, and was shortly thereafter diagnosed with breast cancer. I ended that campaign to take care of her and our boys. We thank God for Mandi's full recovery.
In 2020, when another chance to serve my neighbors came along, I ran for Legislature again. I haven't done anything any conservative Nebraskan wouldn't do if given the chance—I saw a need, had something to contribute, and used my faith, my conservatism, and Nebraska common sense as my guideposts.
It is clear to anybody paying attention that, today, our nation stands at a crossroads. Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi are using the House of Representatives to ram through a radical, socialist agenda that would destroy the nation we love.
With just a razor-thin majority, they have claimed a mandate to pass trillions of dollars in big-government giveaways, raise our taxes, grow government's power, seize control of our elections, and wage partisan witch hunts that are tearing our country apart.
Republicans have to retake the House majority to restore a check on Joe Biden's power and begin to take back our country from the Far Left. Failure is not an option, and there is no margin for error. The battle for House control runs right through Nebraska's 1st Congressional District. This is a race we have to win to save America.
But if our Republican nominee is waging a battle against prosecutors in a courtroom out of state instead of campaigning here in the 1st District, this seat is in jeopardy. If our nominee has to focus on beating felony criminal charges instead of defeating a serious Democrat opponent, we risk defeat in November. Today, I am sad to say that Republicans are not on a path to victory here in our district.
That's why I'm announcing my candidacy to serve Nebraska's 1st Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. I will work tirelessly to win this primary in May, I will win this seat in November, and I will fully focus on taking the fight to the radical socialists in Congress who threaten our values and our way of life.
We must address the issues that affect middle-class Nebraska families every day.
People are struggling to pay skyrocketing prices at the gas pump and in the grocery store.
Workers are losing their jobs simply for refusing to let others dictate their personal healthcare decisions.
Illegal immigrants are flooding across our southern border in droves.
Job-creators are having a difficult time meeting their workforce needs and returning to business as usual.
Our constitutionally assured freedoms are under attack from the dual threats of Big Government and out-of-control Big Tech.
Enemies of the United States are being emboldened every day by the weakness they see in an inept President more concerned about military sensitivity training than military readiness.
And in the face of all our challenges, the Far Left's so-called solutions are the very policies that created this mess in the first place: growing government, pouring even more fuel on the fire of inflation, imposing more mandates, and trying to seize more control for themselves.
I'm running for Congress to fire Nancy Pelosi as Speaker and help secure a House majority that reflects Nebraska's values, not those of radical liberals in California and New York.
I'm running to take back our country and do the work the American people want Congress to do: let them keep more of what they earn, respect their freedoms, and get government out of their way.
I'm running to win, and today, I'm asking Nebraskans to join me in this fight. I have a proven, conservative record of leading with integrity and getting things done, and that's what Nebraskans deserve in their representatives. That's why I'm stepping up to the plate.
I'll close with those words of prayer we need every day, but especially in this time of uncertainty: May God bless the great state of Nebraska and the United States of America.
