Michigan

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Peter Meijer (R-MI) today voted against the Build Back Better (BBB) Act, Democrats’ partisan budget reconciliation bill that will cost over $2 trillion. The legislation includes tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans and billions in earmarks for lobbyists’ interests. The bill passed the House by a vote of 220-213, despite bipartisan opposition. Rep. Meijer released the following statement:

“Contrary to President Biden’s laughable claim that BBB costs zero dollars, this reckless legislation will add hundreds of billions of dollars to the national debt while driving inflation even higher. It’s astounding that Speaker Pelosi wants to hand hard-earned taxpayer dollars to the richest Americans by raising the SALT deduction cap. While we have critical structural challenges as a nation, it is likewise bewildering that my colleagues on the other side of the aisle chose to pursue a bill that would exacerbate our existing supply chain issues while prioritizing their favorite special interests, such as trial lawyers and big media companies. I cannot support legislation that will further saddle future generations with obligations they will already struggle to pay. I voted against this irresponsible bill and hope my Democratic colleagues will someday rise to the responsibility of governing in the best interest of the American people.”
