WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Peter Meijer tonight released the below statement following President Biden’s State of the Union address:

“I was in the Capitol tonight to witness President Biden’s first State of the Union address. It’s no secret that the President and his administration face many challenges: a stalled, tired legislative agenda, the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, spiraling inflation, crippling supply chain problems, and more.

“To highlight a few positives, the President started off his address right by being punctual. He emphasized the unity around supporting Ukraine and ensuring the economic isolation of Vladimir Putin and his corrupt cronies for attacking a sovereign nation. He also called for the need to pass toxic exposure legislation to help veterans suffering from the effects of burn pits overseas.

“In a welcome surprise, President Biden reversed course and affirmed he is opposed to defunding the police, in defiance of the most vocal members of his party. While I also appreciated the President’s acknowledgement of negligent policies that led to skyrocketing numbers of illegal aliens crossing our southern border, I will believe he is committed to securing our borders when he actually does it.

“The most glaring omissions were President Biden’s failures to address the botched withdrawal from Afghanistan and to promote American energy independence. He let Europe and Canada take the lead on closing our airspace to Russian aircraft and failed to acknowledge the importance of American energy. He remained silent about how we can combat Putin’s evil attempts to kill Ukrainian civilians.

“The American people deserve action, and I hope President Biden delivers on the promises he made tonight to reverse course on failed policies and recommit to engaging Congress in a bipartisan fashion.”
