WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Peter Meijer (R-MI) recently joined a group of his House colleagues in sending a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland raising concerns about the recent rise in retail crime. The lawmakers urged the Department of Justice (DOJ) to develop and implement a national strategy to combat organized crime exploding in American cities. The effort was led by Representative Ken Buck (R-CO).
“The worrisome uptick in retail crimes threatens businesses across the country and creates dangerous environments for both employees and customers,” said Rep. Meijer. “With crime continuing to rise in cities big and small, the Justice Department must make it clear to criminals that they are serious about combatting crime.”
“One of the essential functions of our government is to provide security to all citizens,” said Rep. Buck. “Yet despite the continued increase in retail crime, the DOJ has turned a blind eye and refused to act. I urge Attorney General Garland to develop a strategy to reduce retail crime, maintain the rule of law, and protect our civil liberties.”
