Measures would support the U.S. Fire Administration, sanction Russian assets, and form semiconductor working group

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Peter Meijer (R-MI), a member of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology and the House Foreign Affairs Committee, today announced that several bills he helped introduce and an amendment he sponsored were approved during committee markups this week.

During its markup, the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology unanimously passed Rep. Meijer’s bill, the Empowering the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA)Act. The legislation would authorize USFA to send safety specialists, fire protection engineers, code and standards experts, researchers, and fire training specialists to collaborate and assist local firefighter investigators in their investigations. The bill also requires USFA to issue a report in coordination with federal, state, and local authorities on their findings and to provide recommendations for officials to implement to prevent similar fires from occurring in the future.

This bill is supported by the Grand Rapids Fire Department.During its markup, the House Foreign Affairs Committee unanimously passed Rep. Meijer’s bill, the Asset Seizure for Ukraine Reconstruction Act. The legislation encourages the President to take necessary steps, under his constitutional authority, to seize and confiscate Russian assets valued over $2 million and repurpose the seized assets for the benefit of the Ukrainian people, including through post-conflict reconstruction and humanitarian assistance. The bill also establishes an interagency working group to determine the constitutional mechanisms the President can and should use to seize these Russian assets.

The House Foreign Affairs Committee passed Rep. Meijer’s amendment calling for the President to expand the list of Russian parliamentarians eligible for sanctions for their dangerous and illegal vote to recognize the so-called Donetsk People’s Republic and Luhansk People’s Republic and grant President Putin consent to use military force in the Donbas.

The House Foreign Affairs Committee unanimously passed Rep. Meijer’s bill, the bipartisan Protecting Semiconductor Supply Chain Materials from Authoritarians Act. The legislation amends the Ukraine Freedom Support Act of 2014 to establish a working group to report on the semiconductor supply chain disruptions caused by Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, develop strategies for bolstering supplies of critical elements, compounds, and products, and monitor potential threats to the semiconductor supply chains.
