Meijer, Colleagues Call on Biden, FDA to Address Nationwide Formula Shortage

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Peter Meijer (R-MI) this week joined 105 of his House colleagues, led by Ranking Member of the Energy and Commerce Committee Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), in sending a letter to President Joe Biden and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf urging immediate action to address the ongoing baby formula shortage.

“I’m proud to join Representative McMorris Rodgers and more than 100 of my House Republican colleagues in demanding that President Biden move swiftly to get safe production of baby formula back up and running,” said Rep. Meijer. “With this letter, my colleagues and I can get answers we need from the FDA regarding how the Abbott facility in West Michigan can resume operations. The ongoing shortage has affected parents across West Michigan and is a threat to the wellbeing of babies across the country.”

In the letter, the lawmakers request data on the shortage and demand answers regarding what the Administration is doing to address it.

“The share of baby formula ‘out of stock across the U.S. hit 40 percent on April 24 and a ‘total of 26 states have out of stock rates of 40 to 50 percent. This issue is a matter of life and death, and it is time this Administration treats it with the appropriate urgency it deserves,”they wrote. “Baby formula shortages are an urgent problem that must be addressed immediately. House Republicans call on the Administration to do more to help parents across this country.”
