WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Rep. Debbie Dingell (MI-12) and the U.S. House of Representatives voted to pass H.R. 1333, the National Origin-Based Antidiscrimination for Nonimmigrants (NO BAN) Act. This legislation will prevent any future president from issuing baseless, discriminatory travel bans. Dingell presided over the House during debate and gaveled down the bill for final passage. “Arab Americans are an integral part of Michigan’s identity and have made enormous contributions to our society,” said Rep. Dingell. “My constituents have fled war and violence to seek a safer life – many of their families still experience this suffering every day. The former President’s Muslim Ban kept these families separated, inspired fear, and perpetuated hate. We must work together to restore the faith and trust of the international communities targeted by the previous Administration. This legislation is a significant step to uphold our American values, celebrate our diversity, and not let fear divide us.”
In 2017, President Donald Trump issued three versions of his Muslim Ban to bar foreign nationals from several Muslim majority countries from entering the United States. This ban caused significant hardship, confusion, and chaos for Muslims in the United States and around the world, while inspiring fear, perpetuating hate towards Muslims, and threatening national security.
The NO BAN Act strengthens the Immigration and Nationality Act to prohibit discrimination on the basis of religion and limits overly broad executive authority to issue future travel bans.
